Preparedness Measures for UNT Parents

The University of North Texas has an emergency Notification System, Eagle Alert, which has the capability of calling or text messaging emergency notices. As a parent, you may also register with Eagle Alert to receive notification of any warnings or campus closings that are announced. Instructions for enrollment can be found at my.unt.edu. The university's radio station, KNTU 88.1 FM and website http://www.unt.edu, will provide updated information during an emergency situation.

Residents of the City of Denton can also register with Code Red, a telecommunications service which alerts citizens of the city of severe weather and other potentially hazardous events. Six weather sirens are located throughout the campus, and will be sounded in the event of severe weather. The sirens are tested the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00 noon.

For the parents whose children are living on campus, each residence hall has strict safety measures in place including tornado and fire drills which are performed at the beginning of each semester. To learn more about specific safety and security details offered at each residence halls, please view the UNT Housing web page.

Make sure your family has a plan in case of an emergency. Before an emergency happens, sit down together, and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go and what you will do in an emergency. Keep a copy of your family emergency response plan in your "72-hour" kit or another safe place where you can access it in the event of a disaster.

Parents should consider adding an ICE contact on family member's mobile phones. ICE, an acronym for “In Case of Emergency”, is entered into a mobile phone user’s address/contact book as the “In Case of Emergency” contact. ICE allows paramedics or police to be able to contact a designated relative/next-of-kin in an emergency situation.

Regardless of where your child lives during his or her educational experience at UNT, you can improve your child's resilience to an emergency by having an action plan in place including an emergency contact and meeting location before an event occurs.
